it’s just a book…”Chinese Propaganda Posters” ed. Taschen/Michael Wolf

April 9th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Art, History, It's just a Book

Michael Wolf is a German photographer who has lived in China for the last 15 years.

The collaboration with the publisher Benedict Taschen produced Wolf’s documentation of the shaping of public politics and opinion making comprising his extensive collection of Chinese propaganda posters.

As always, nothing is more revealing about the truth of politics than its propaganda – this goes for East and West, dictatorship or democracy.

Like other posters of the same era that advertised soap instead of Communism, the posters have an arty nostalgic quality that has little to in common with real life.

The old technique of posing with children or pets (it’s still being used by Presidential candidates no matter what their political camp – just watch out for samples in the upcoming UK elelctions) has many examples.

It’s a nicely illustrated documentation of what should have been.

“an arty nostalgic quality that has little… in common with real life.”

    chart wot we’ read

I’m alluding only to the manner of execution of course, not the content.
